One of these hidden treasures is Anafiotika, a picturesque village in the heart of Plaka. This small area was built by workers from Anafi Island in the 19th century and still retains the traditional Cycladic architecture. Stroll through the narrow streets, admire the whitewashed houses with colorful flowers and enjoy the beautiful view of the Acropolis. Another must is the place in Plaka Lysicrates Monument, also known as the “Lantern of Diogenes”. This monument was built in honor of Lysicrates, a wealthy Athenian citizen, who sponsored a choir that won a prize at a music competition. The monument itself is beautifully decorated.
